There are over 300 lawyers (abogados) in San Miguel available to represent buyers or sellers in residential real estate transactions and serve other legal needs. The local bar association is the Colegio de Abogados de San Miguel de Allende, Gto. AC, the President of which is Miguel Ángel Chagollan Silva. Lawyers are licensed by Secretaría de Educación Publica (SEP) through the Dirección General de Profesiones.

Many lawyers are sole practitioners, but there are a few firms with more than one lawyer. There is no large firm such as is common in the US.

As in the case of any professional, you will want to note your specific requirements and obtain a written engagement letter that clearly sets forth the attorney’s assignment, privacy rules, and fees and costs. Do not assume that the rules of engagement will be similar to the ones with which you are familiar in the US. Remember that you are operating under a jurisprudence that is very different from the common law of the US (where a high degree of certainty is the norm). Always ask for three references and call them.
